April 6, 2008 - KaBOOKi met in LA to discuss "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. Sara picked it, and considers it as the back of the book says: "The ultimate love story". Others disagreed. One of the main issues was the cover itself, and the pedifilic undertones of the entire story. The protagonist is a man who time travels without control, and ends up naked in his wife's backyard when she is 6 years old. Now, there are a couple ways to look at THAT. One is that it's an older naked man appearing to a young girl.. and one is that it is a desparate man, and the only help is his spouse! It's a hard one, but many of the women were extremely turned off by this, and I'm surprised that the author is a woman! People also voiced the concern that the changing of times throughout the book left them confused. Each chapter was a different time in their history, but this didn't confuse me. It may be because I often read the book straight through, and rarely take several days to finish a book. In fact, I read this book in 2 days. I related to the main character, Claire, in that she is a red-headed artist!
Food is always the highlight of the evening, and Michele hosted a beautiful dinner with veggie & chicken pizzas (book set in Chicago), chicken & mango sausage w/ applesauce, italian chopped salad, tom kahkai soup, peas, white pasta, goat & stinky cheese plate w/ salmon pate', kalamata olives, spinach salad, champagne, wine... it was beautiful!! The next book is Of Human Bondage. Join us!
